Chapter Thirteen

“Do you think I’m being too hard on her?” I wasn’t willing to open up to Winter yet, but I needed to know if I was acting like a completely unjustified ass.

“Who?” Donovan’s fingertips brushed my arm as he chuckled. “Winter?”

I smacked him on the arm gently. “Yes. Who else would I be talking about?”

“In all fairness, you’re super hard on yourself.” Donovan pulled me closer to him. “But to answer your question, no, you aren’t being too hard on her.”

“Then, why do I feel like I am?” I’d always wanted to know my mother. I’d dreamed of her so many times growing up. I’d imagined her coming to me and taking me away from Tyler. Wasn’t that what mothers were supposed to do? Protect their children at all costs? She hadn’t done any of that for me.

“Because you grew up thinking she was dead.” He kissed my forehead. “And then you found out what happened, which was almost worse. She was alive and left you behind even if it was unintentional.”

When he put it like that, my anger, my hesitancy, and even my longing made more sense. However, the first two feelings were the strongest, which made me even angrier for wanting to know her more. Blood didn’t create a family. I had to remind myself of that.

“What do I do?” I didn’t know how to move forward. How did you overcome something like that? Inside, my feelings lay shattered.

“You discover yourself first.”

It sounded so simple. And the truth behind it rocked me to my core.

I didn’t know who I was.

My entire life, Tyler had dictated so much. Hell, at times, I’d felt like I wasn’t allowed to breathe without permission. Then, Brock had jumped at the opportunity to attend Kortright University with me, and he was just as bad as Tyler. Brock had smothered me and tried to control me, despite being from a different pack. “How do I do that?”

“You take things day by day.” He intertwined our fingers. “You don’t have to figure everything out today.”

“I just don’t want to live with a lifetime of guilt if something bad happens.” I moved back to look him in the eyes. “Not only to my mom but to you too.” The whole day was catching up to me in a flash. “You got captured because of me.”

“But I didn’t get hurt,” he reassured me.

“No, but you could’ve.” Everyone I was close to seemed to have a target on their backs. Roxy had taken on more hostility and pettiness from Tyler than she would’ve if we hadn’t been friends, and a vampire had targeted Donovan. Was I cursed? “Those fae used each one of you to get to me. They separated you. They have to know you’re my mate.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Emotion laced each word. “There is nowhere else I want to be than here with you. I’m okay with the risks.”

“I’m not sure I am.” The thought of him dying hurt so much. That was why I’d bitten him in the first place.
